Spicy Nadan Kadala Curry Recipe. An authentic Kerala dish. Served this Kadala Curry with Kerala Puttu/Soft Rice Flour Puttu. Kadala Curry - Rice Puttu is the most popular world wide known breakfast dish of Kerala. An healthy choice for breakfast. It is called Kola Puttu (Kuzhal Pitta) in Tamil.
Ingredients and spices that need to be Prepare to make Spicy Nadan Kadala Curry:
- To be Boiled in Cooker/Instant Pot:
- 1 cup Brown Chana (Soaked Overnight)
- 1 small Onion (Sliced)
- 1/2 Tomato (Chopped)
- as required Salt to Taste
- 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 3 cups Water
- To be Crushed:
- 1/2 tsp Fennel Seeds
- 1/2 tsp Whole Black Pepper
- 4-5 cloves Garlic
- 1 Inch Ginger
- For Making Kadala Masala:
- 3 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 2 Onions (Chopped)
- 2 Green Chillies
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves
- 1 1/2 small Tomatoes
- To be added when Gravy is Done:
- 1/4 tsp White Pepper Powder
- 2 Green Chillies (Slited)
- 1/4 tsp Fennel Seeds Powder
- 1/4 tsp Garam Masala Powder
- few Curry Leaves
- as required Coconut Oil
- few Tomato Pieces
- 2 Green Chillies (Slited)
- To Make the Masala Paste:
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1/2 tbsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
- 3/4 tbsp Spicy Red Chilli Powder
- 1 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
- 1/2 tsp Garam Masala Powder
- Tempering:
- 2 tsp Coconut Oil
- 2 Dried Red Chillies
- 10 Pearl/Sambar Onions
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves
- Garnish:
- as required Coconut Bits Fried in Coconut Oil
- 2-3 tbsp Coriander Leaves (Chopped)
- little Powdered Sugar
- To Make Kerala Puttu:
- 1 cup Rice Flour
- 150 gms Freshly Grated Coconut
- as required Salt to Taste
- as required Hot Water
- 1 Puttu Maker
Instructions to make to make Spicy Nadan Kadala Curry
- Firstly, soak the brown chana overnight or for minimum six hours. After the soaking time, drain away the water and wash it well. Transfer them to a cooker/instant pot. Add the sliced onions and chopped tomato.
- Also add coconut oil and salt.
- Add water and mix it well. Close and lock the lid of the pressure cooker. Turn the steam value to “sealedâ€. Select “Pressure Cookerâ€and set the time to 15 minutes. When the time is up, let the pressure come down naturally. (In normal cooker, cook on medium flame for 5 whistles or until cooked)
- When the chana is done, strain and separate the chana and the water and keep it aside.
- From the cooked chana, transfer three-four tablespoon of the chana alongwith with some water in a blender. When it is cool, blend it to a smooth paste. Set it aside.
- Crush the ginger and garlic together and crush the black pepper and fennel seed together. Set it aside.
- In a bowl add turmeric powder, kashmiri red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Add some water to it and mix it well to make a masala paste. Set it aside.
- In a pan, heat some coconut oil. Add the coconut bits and fry it until golden brown. Transfer it to a plate and set it aside.
