Spicy Nadan Kadala Curry Recipe. An authentic Kerala dish. Served this Kadala Curry with Kerala Puttu/Soft Rice Flour Puttu. Kadala Curry - Rice Puttu is the most popular world wide known breakfast dish of Kerala. An healthy choice for breakfast. It is called Kola Puttu (Kuzhal Pitta) in Tamil.

Ingredients and spices that need to be Prepare to make Spicy Nadan Kadala Curry:

  1. To be Boiled in Cooker/Instant Pot:
  2. 1 cup Brown Chana (Soaked Overnight)
  3. 1 small Onion (Sliced)
  4. 1/2 Tomato (Chopped)
  5. as required Salt to Taste
  6. 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
  7. 3 cups Water
  8. To be Crushed:
  9. 1/2 tsp Fennel Seeds
  10. 1/2 tsp Whole Black Pepper
  11. 4-5 cloves Garlic
  12. 1 Inch Ginger
  13. For Making Kadala Masala:
  14. 3 tbsp Coconut Oil
  15. 2 Onions (Chopped)
  16. 2 Green Chillies
  17. 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  18. 1 1/2 small Tomatoes
  19. To be added when Gravy is Done:
  20. 1/4 tsp White Pepper Powder
  21. 2 Green Chillies (Slited)
  22. 1/4 tsp Fennel Seeds Powder
  23. 1/4 tsp Garam Masala Powder
  24. few Curry Leaves
  25. as required Coconut Oil
  26. few Tomato Pieces
  27. 2 Green Chillies (Slited)
  28. To Make the Masala Paste:
  29. 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  30. 1/2 tbsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
  31. 3/4 tbsp Spicy Red Chilli Powder
  32. 1 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
  33. 1/2 tsp Garam Masala Powder
  34. Tempering:
  35. 2 tsp Coconut Oil
  36. 2 Dried Red Chillies
  37. 10 Pearl/Sambar Onions
  38. 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  39. Garnish:
  40. as required Coconut Bits Fried in Coconut Oil
  41. 2-3 tbsp Coriander Leaves (Chopped)
  42. little Powdered Sugar
  43. To Make Kerala Puttu:
  44. 1 cup Rice Flour
  45. 150 gms Freshly Grated Coconut
  46. as required Salt to Taste
  47. as required Hot Water
  48. 1 Puttu Maker

Instructions to make to make Spicy Nadan Kadala Curry

  1. Firstly, soak the brown chana overnight or for minimum six hours. After the soaking time, drain away the water and wash it well. Transfer them to a cooker/instant pot. Add the sliced onions and chopped tomato.
  2. Also add coconut oil and salt.
  3. Add water and mix it well. Close and lock the lid of the pressure cooker. Turn the steam value to “sealed”. Select “Pressure Cooker”and set the time to 15 minutes. When the time is up, let the pressure come down naturally. (In normal cooker, cook on medium flame for 5 whistles or until cooked)
  4. When the chana is done, strain and separate the chana and the water and keep it aside.
  5. From the cooked chana, transfer three-four tablespoon of the chana alongwith with some water in a blender. When it is cool, blend it to a smooth paste. Set it aside.
  6. Crush the ginger and garlic together and crush the black pepper and fennel seed together. Set it aside.
  7. In a bowl add turmeric powder, kashmiri red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Add some water to it and mix it well to make a masala paste. Set it aside.
  8. In a pan, heat some coconut oil. Add the coconut bits and fry it until golden brown. Transfer it to a plate and set it aside.
